My first recollection of race had to be of when I made my first friend at the age of 5. My first friend was my next door neighbor in Jersey City and he happened to be a white boy. His name is Greg or what the other kids and I called him Rico like rice. He couldn’t really relate his home to us other kids who would have pernile and arrozz con gandules at home for dinner. Instead he would eat baked potato and chicken. Some other Hispanics on the block were white too but we came to realize they were just white babies, we really understood our differences because his house didn’t smell like there was food being cooked all the time and his parents were really nice quiet kind of people around us. The recollection of finding out about race through Greg or (Rico) helped me find out about my own race. Even though I grew in a more Hispanic background from time to time I would get thrown in the mix with my Filipino cousins and just wonder why they were so quiet. At the age of 9 I determined the difference of the two sides of my family and realized my race as a Hispanic Asian.  This gave me an idea of what ethnicity was when we would talk about it during geography, a class part of third grade. My family that had an Asian ethnicity was much more quiet people who prided school work and money. Although growing up more around my Hispanic ethnicity I was open to hanging out in the streets, experimenting at an early age, speaking Spanish and just more loud and carefree people. When it comes down to ethnicity my mother always told me I was more Asian than Hispanic because I came from her. As far as that idea goes for me after reading this chapter I don’t think she was completely correct.
Race or ethnicity in the United States is used more or less to separate people or bring them together.  Race and ethnicity in majority situations I think people have witnessed is in the eyes of prejudice. People have seen the use of race or ethnicity from certain people to separate themselves from other races or ethnic groups. Some white parents will take their kids out from the park if an African American woman comes with their child. Or some people tend to feel uncomfortable being on planes around Middle Eastern people. Although like in college where people are more educated on prejudice and understanding of costumes, races, and ethnicities they use these ideas in ways of making their own race or ethnicity stronger. In universities they try to pull together their own races and ethnicities to become more social within each other because they can relate to each other backgrounds or feel comfortable speaking the same language and feel more at home. Also we relate race and ethnicity with money in this country. People tend to make big assumptions if you see a darker man with money in a more urban city, although the view of a white man with a lot of money or Asian is not looked upon more questionable. The knowledge I have based upon in this course gives me more of an interactionist perspective about race and ethnicity. My views have changed although not changed much. My understandings of my race when I was a little boy happen to be correct just by noticing the different ways of living from me, my other friend, and the white boy. Now I see race as more of a whole while ethnicity is just one more dividing factor behind that whole.

When we are young we don’t know the difference between social classes. All we know are our wants and we get a simple no or yes to getting our desire. I realized what social class is when I was turned nine years old and entered the third grade. I moved to the suburbs for the first time and you could tell who had money and who didn’t. Many of the people I had come to meet in the elementary school had big two floor houses, nice cars, big birthday parties, and mostly everything they wanted. It took me two years to get a bike and my mother and step father shared one care. That’s how it was very distinguishable to me in social classes at first. The minute I realized another kids parent had two cars money definitely was not an issue for that kid.
I’ve always had an open mind about my position in society but didn’t look at it closely as Karl Marx did. I did realize there was a separation of classes but not into effect that we are retained to certain social class. I figured we can make the best of our life and change our position of our social class willingly whenever we wanted. It would just take realization of where you are in the social class ladder and if you want to go up you must work harder. I do realize I come from a family that is in the middle of the social class and currently I remain in the middle. Although the fact of going to college is to change the class in which we are born into breaking the classification of “castes”.
As a younger person I believe to myself I have not experienced false consciousness. I believe you experience false consciousness when you have the ability to pass into the next social class but are retained back by whatever. The example of being exploited by your boss that Karl Marx uses sets up the idea that you as the worker have the knowledge and understanding that if you revolt you can achieve more and will move up by making the public around aware you understand your being exploited.

Formal social control is the regulation of the people, group, or society by compliance with set rules or form of consequence. If you speak out of terms within the class you’re in and it’s a rule not to, your grade can take a loss of points due to your action. Breaking the law has consequences of formal social control as paying fines or jail time. A mechanism of social formal control at my job is if you are careless with the money. In your register either you steal it or count change wrong making you short cash, or are over cash by the amount of $25 you get a write up. Three write ups is a termination, also stealing from the company results in automatic termination. These are guidelines so a worker stays business related and doesn’t confuse work with their personal life, its simply just about making money, each employee is more of an object.
Informal social control is reactions of peers which makes the conformity of that community or area. On the Kean university campus informal social control are simple things as curtsy as helping an individual pick up papers that slipped out their folder while walking, or providing a smoker with a lighter when the don’t have one. Although it is also evident in social groups. In my group of friends lying is a disturbance, if you have something to do and cant hangout or can’t do someone a favor just be honest. For example if Jonathan would keep lying, the more he lied the less we would talk to him and be social with him until he caught on and eventually changed his ways.
In a society of standards of equal balance formal control is a dominating factor, although among social standards informal control rules. In social groups constant acts of breaking the law occur due to social pressures. Countless teenagers drink underage and throw parties to be cool in which they are breaking the bounds of formal social control. Deviance -The fact or state of departing from usual or accepted standards, esp. in social or sexual behavior. in the inner city and urban communities being a thug is more socially accepted in strong areas and break laws or formal social controls is looked as a cool respectable type of mentality. Deviance is the defiance of formal social control in which society is bind by. In defiance the human mind feels emotions of satisfaction and sense of superiority.

Applebee’s the one by toys R us down the street of main campus.
The sociological perspective on the media that I agree with the most is technology because the whole world revolves around technology. The only way people stop their normal lives in today’s society if something technologically important that runs a building, office, or any other work place shuts down. Something that stops us from being in communication puts everyone in confusion. A terrible storm that makes most technology in a family’s house not work brings that family closer together than more than half of the days in the year. Technology keeps everyone in competition also with phones, appeal, and gadgets. You could look completely poor but if your texting on an iPhone people will think twice about you. Technology is the prime of our society and any other society and if you don’t have the newest or the latest it surely isn’t the best and you’re not number one.

As a sociologist I would say this person is big to themself and his inner circle of social networking because their mass media profile isn’t that wide. Even by the amount of internet history and visited sites they aren’t too broad. By the look of their web history which surprisingly they spend more time on the web than watching TV I would say the person is big on movement and had an important or vital place to be from all the directions that were looked up. Overall this person doesn’t spend much time social networking or looking at mass media.
Since I took record during two school days my time and priorities drifted away from mass media and my norms were based on studying and class. They effected my free time and my usual time by keeping me focused on studies and homework and just in general being in class. During the school year I’m really not big on mass media and just watch the news to try to keep up with what’s new in the world and rely on social networking with my friends to find the newest trends. Keeping my school priorities high doesn’t bother me because in the end it all pays off. People watch way too much TV anyways and it’s not really my type of thing.

Response paper 2

Discuss a time in your life when you experienced culture shock. Based on your knowledge attained in this course, what role did ethnocentrism play in this experience? What did you learn from this experience?
In a point of my life I was kicked out my house and had no other choice but to live with my uncle in Ohio. The culture shock that I had experienced moving to a white ignorant suburban society never gave me anger toward a group of people like that before in my life. Being ridiculed as a Hispanic that was looked worst upon than an African American, a Middle eastern or anything else put my mind in utter confusion. The ignorance that society had was so disturbing that they did not comprehend the fact there was different nationalities of Hispanics. Me and another kid Jalil we’re the only two Hispanics in the school and even though I am Puerto Rican and he is Colombian they categorized as “Mexicans”. He turned out to get more respect around the school campus because he was one of the prominent soccer players. It didn’t take long till I had to I had to kill their pride of ethnocentrism by showing my skills on the basketball and be their starting point guard for their 2008-2009 season.
They didn’t think Hispanics were better athletes than whites but in the end it doesn’t matter the race totally because skill and practice isn’t determined by race but by the amount of time you put into a sport. Their idea of ethnocentrism placed their white society from living in their little bubble above all other ethnicities. The most vital part of the culture shock I experienced was getting arrested by what I come to believe the most racist cop I ever came across my whole life. A simple assault charge turned into assault, and bantering misconduct to a lawed officer. Knowing I was right I fought the case and got a simple misdemeanor. After experiencing the harassment by the officer in the holding room at sixteen years of age gave me mixed views of that white community. Although growing up and becoming wiser and having more insight that there are just some people in the world you cannot change made me a better person today than that cop would ever be.

Response paper 1

Based on the information presented in Chapters 1 and 2, in what ways do you anticipate this course and the study of sociology will contribute to your education and or relate to your career goals?

Unfortunately we live in a society of lies and competition. After reading chapters one and two just getting a touch not even the full grasp of sociology it is clear to see that in our society it is probable to say that your neighbor would step on you so they could get placed higher in life and  live more comfortably . I see this class really helping my career goals since I’m majoring in biology and plan to be a physician or something major in the medical field. How would this help me as a physician? In many cases I would overall be dealing with patients independently but in the large scale look of things I would need to look at what in the patient’s life and impact of society could be causing them stress or who are they relating with that could be contracting viruses. Looking at the macro sociological scale could help me understand what are giving my patients problems further more than the microscopic level.  Although rather more I see this class helping myself as a first year college student in adapting to knowing and relating to my peers who come from different homes, states, backgrounds, countries, or whatever the case maybe.
A term which I came across from the chapter was anomie- loss of direction felt in a society when social control of indivual behavior has become ineffective. Understanding sociology helped me sort of understand and appreciate history in my mind more and gave me gradual insight to the class. It makes you ask yourself why for every little thing. One big question that I ponder about now is how was the white society in the 1600’s okay with having slaves and not feeling unethical living their everyday life. Society - The community of people living in a particular country or region and having shared customs, laws, and organizations.
I believe that this class will also better help me read groups of people and learn how to cooperate with an uncooperative coworker in the future.  Reading about the various sociological theorists brings broad insight to different ways of how to understand how societies revolve around certain cultures, ways or practices, and just basic ways of living. This class has much to bring more to than just me as one single student studying to make his goal happen but as to give me an understanding of the class my peers and in the end wisdom of how we as a world coincide to live among once another in harmony rather than separation.
